A scheduling conflict, restriction on religious dress, or employment decision tied to your beliefs may require more than an ordinary workplace conversation. Identify the religious practice involved, what your employer knew, and the response you received.

Religious discrimination and accommodation
Title VII generally covers employers with at least 15 employees. It prohibits employment discrimination because of religion and can protect sincerely held religious beliefs and practices beyond membership in an organized denomination. The law can also protect employees from adverse treatment because they do not share an employer's religious beliefs.
Religious discrimination may affect hiring, promotion, assignments, discipline, or termination. Harassment and pressure to participate in religious activity can raise separate questions. The employer, conduct, and circumstances matter, including any applicable statutory or constitutional exceptions for religious organizations or particular positions.
A covered employer generally must reasonably accommodate a sincerely held religious practice unless it would cause undue hardship. Possible adjustments include scheduling changes, voluntary shift swaps, or exceptions to dress and grooming rules. The Supreme Court's Groff decision requires evaluation of substantial increased costs in relation to the particular business. A minor inconvenience does not automatically establish undue hardship.
Explain the conflict and preserve responses
Tell the employer enough to explain that a work requirement conflicts with a religious practice and that you need an adjustment. Identify the schedule or policy involved and any alternatives you proposed. An employer may offer an effective reasonable accommodation other than your preferred arrangement.
Preserve your request, relevant schedules, policy language, and the employer's responses that you lawfully possess. Note who considered alternatives, what reasons were given, and whether discipline followed the request. Record any religious remarks and witnesses.
A request for accommodation does not excuse unrelated misconduct. Bring any attendance or performance concerns so we can assess the employer's reasons in context.
We evaluate the accommodation discussion separately from discriminatory treatment and retaliation. The nature of the work, available alternatives, and actual operational effects can matter. A general statement that an exception would be inconvenient does not explain the whole dispute.
Review your options promptly
Alabama employees generally have 180 days to file a Title VII charge with the EEOC. Federal employees ordinarily must contact an EEO counselor within 45 days. Different procedures and exceptions may apply. An internal complaint generally does not extend the EEOC filing period.
If an accommodation denial or employment decision threatens your job, call Aventus Law PLLC at (205) 210-8533. Bring the request and employer response so we can discuss the facts and next steps. Contacting us does not file a charge or preserve a deadline.
